Municipal Charter
On February 4, 1997, the Board of Miami Dade County Commissioners adopted Ordinance 97-7, which created the new municipality of Sunny Isles Beach, subject to the approval of a municipal charter by qualified electors, and appointed a Charter Commission for the newly created municipality. The Sunny Isles Beach Charter Commission was given the task of proposing a municipal charter to be submitted to the electors residing within the City’s boundaries. On June 16, 1997, the proposed Sunny Isles Beach Municipal Charter was approved overwhelming by the electors of the City.
In December 2002 (in accordance with the Municipal Charter) the City appointed a Charter Review Commission to review the Municipal Charter and draft amendments as deemed appropriate for submission to the electors of the City. In a Special Election held June 10, 2003, the electors of the City of Sunny Isles Beach approved the revised Municipal Charter, as submitted by the Charter Review Commission. The revised Municipal Charter was adopted by the City Commission on July 17, 2003, via Ordinance No. 2003-174. Section 7.4 of the City’s Charter provides that the first Charter Review Commission was to be appointed in December 2002 and thereafter every tenth (10) year commencing December 2012. The revised Sunny Isles Beach Municipal Charter is included in the City’s Code of Ordinances and is available online. The original Municipal Charter is available in the Office of the City Clerk.
